Source Kansas City Business Journal Aug 13, 2024 03:07 PM CDT Author Grace Mayer A metro-area Prime Healthcare hospital will play a part in bolstering nationwide access to clinical trials. EmVenio Research‘s new center will go inside Providence Medical Center, 8929 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas. The center, which is being renovated, is expected to open in mid-September, EmVenio spokesperson Carolyn Wait said via email. “For Providence Medical Center, we recognized that while there are some clinical trials occurring, it is an area that we could support (with) more trials,” wrote Wait, sales operations senior manager at EmVenio. “Looking at the size of the Kansas City area, its population, and diversity, we feel like this site could help to benefit the … residents of Kansas City and increase what we can learn during clinical trials.” The research center, one of a handful EmVenio is opening this year throughout the country, could aid in finishing studies faster, which also would bring treatments to market more quickly. That could mean big cost savings for life sciences and pharmaceutical companies: Clinical trials often can stretch on for years and cost companies millions. “The lack of research sites within a community limits availability for patient participation and … hinders sponsor enrollment opportunities, which in turn can impact overall study timelines,” EmVenio President Thad Wolfram said in a release. “These sites will appeal to those looking to reach new community-based participant populations, as well as net new participants, thus allowing trials to enroll faster and wrap more quickly.” EmVenio, based in Durham, North Carolina, focuses on increasing clinical trial sites nationwide, by specifically boosting access in communities underrepresented in trials. Prime Healthcare, a for-profit system based in Ontario, California, has three other hospitals in Kansas City: St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Kansas City, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs and Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth … When EmVenio and Prime Healthcare were weighing locations for potential research centers, they focused on improving access to clinical research in Prime’s local hospital network, Wait wrote. They also wanted to set up centers in rural, Midwest and Southern areas, which often lack access to trials, and to tap into these populations for participants. Having access to diverse trial candidates is essential for … creating safe and effective treatments for more people, Wait wrote. The teams landed on opening the location in KCK, along with places in Dallas, Atlanta and Michigan. The Dallas and Atlanta research centers opened this month. Although the Kansas site will open with three full-time employees, EmVenio plans to hire additional staff as studies require it, Wait wrote. The Providence Medical Center site will be available to clinical research organizations and trial sponsors. EmVenio researchers also will conduct clinical trials at the Prime locations.
